Little Beginnings @ Kolodong Taree NSW

The playground upgrade at Little Beginnings at Kolodong transformed a previously flood-prone outdoor area into a safe, functional and engaging environment for early childhood learning. LeadBuilt delivered a comprehensive redevelopment that addressed drainage challenges while introducing new play structures, sensory learning features, shaded activity zones and raised playground boundary fencing to improve centre security and support active outdoor learning.

Key Project Highlights:

Yarning Circle and Pergola Learning Space
A dedicated yarning circle was introduced as a central gathering space within the playground, constructed with sandstone block seating arranged in a circular formation. A new hardwood open pergola was built above the circle, creating a defined outdoor learning and gathering space for storytelling, group discussions and educator-led activities.

Open and Flexible Play Areas with Soft Fall Surfacing
Large sections of the playground were transformed into open and flexible play zones using premium synthetic turf and soft fall matting installed on a carefully prepared base. A new shade sail was installed above this area to support dynamic play activities such as climbing, running and ball games including soccer, while encouraging movement and social interaction.

Custom Timber Play Fort and Dynamic Play Features
A new timber play fort was installed as a central play feature, incorporating elevated platforms, climbing elements and a double slide designed to promote physical development, balance and coordination. Surrounding climbing features further encourage active play and confidence-building.

Sensory Pathways and Water Play Features
A new sensory pathway was constructed using sandstone paving, cobblestones and brick elements to create varied textures underfoot. Water misting arbours were also installed throughout the playground, providing an interactive cooling feature while enhancing the sensory play experience.

Improved Centre Security and Boundary Fencing
The entire playground boundary fence was replaced with 1.8m high, pool compliant aluminium fencing with emergency evacuation gates in accordance with current childcare safety requirements. This upgrade improves centre security by preventing unaccompanied exits while restricting unauthorised access to the playground.

Major Drainage Upgrade to Prevent Flooding
To resolve previous flooding issues, LeadBuilt installed a new strip drain system connected to the stormwater network, along with upgraded pits and drainage pipework to redirect water away from play areas and improve long-term site performance.

A Safer and More Functional Outdoor Learning Environment
The completed playground now provides a dynamic outdoor learning environment that balances active and flexible play with sensory exploration and shaded learning areas, delivering a safer and more functional space for children and educators.
